Overview
Not every task on a construction site or in a workplace requires a Safe Work Method Statement. But that does not mean those tasks are without risk. Safe Work Procedures fill that gap. They identify the hazards in everyday work activities, assess the risks, and document exactly how those tasks are performed safely every time.
At Local Safety Solutions we write tailored Safe Work Procedures for your specific trade, your specific equipment, and your specific work environment. We do not hand you a generic procedure written for every business and no business in particular. We consult with you, understand how your work is actually done, and produce procedures that your workers can read, understand, and follow on site or in the field without a safety advisor standing over them.
Depending on your industry, your work activities, and what your principal contractor or regulator requires, a Safe Work Procedure can take different forms. A Job Safety Analysis is used when you need to break a task into steps, identify the hazards at each step, rate the risk, and document the controls before work begins. A Standard Operating Procedure is used when you need a documented step by step method for operating specific equipment or performing a recurring task the same safe way every time. A Take 5 Pre-Task Checklist is used when your workers need a quick two minute risk assessment at the start of each task to account for the actual conditions on the day. A Field Level Risk Assessment is used in environments where site conditions change frequently and hazards need to be identified and assessed fresh before every shift or task. A Plant Risk Assessment is used when a specific piece of plant or equipment requires a formal documented assessment of the risks associated with its operation, including pre-start inspection requirements and operator obligations. A Hazardous Chemical Risk Assessment is used when your work involves chemicals that require more than just a Safety Data Sheet — a formal assessment of how those chemicals are used in your specific work environment and what controls must be in place to protect your workers.
Not every business needs all of these. Some businesses need one. Some need several. What matters is that the right procedure exists for the right task in your business. We work with you through our simple intake process to identify exactly which Safe Work Procedures your business needs, then we write them specifically for you.
Our Safe Work Procedure template structure is designed to meet all requirements set by Australian WHS regulators. Every mandatory element is included and every document we produce is built to satisfy a principal contractor audit, a WorkSafe inspection, or a tender prequalification review.
Safe Work Procedures are also a legally recognised tool for demonstrating your duty of care under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011. When something goes wrong on site and WorkSafe asks how your workers were trained and what safe systems of work were in place, your Safe Work Procedures are the evidence that your business had the right systems and your workers knew how to follow them. If you do not have them, you cannot demonstrate your duty of care. Local Safety Solutions makes sure you can.
What is included
Safe Work Procedures are tailored depending on what your business needs. We assess your work activities, your industry, and your obligations and recommend the right type of procedure for each situation.
Every procedure we produce includes the following.
Hazard identification and risk rating at each step of the work
Control measures applied through the hierarchy of controls from elimination through to personal protective equipment
Plant Risk Assessment for all plant and equipment used in your operations
Hazardous Chemical Risk Assessment referencing relevant Safety Data Sheets
Step by step task breakdown for every procedure
Responsibilities documented for each control measure
Worker acknowledgement and sign off section
Version control and scheduled review date
Who needs this
Any business that performs work carrying risk but does not require a SWMS needs Safe Work Procedures in place. This covers the vast majority of everyday tasks across all industries including construction, trades, manufacturing, transport, landscaping, healthcare, and community services.
If your workers perform routine tasks involving equipment, chemicals, or physical hazard then you need documented Safe Work Procedures in place. If a WorkSafe inspector arrives and asks how your workers are trained to perform a specific task safely, your Safe Work Procedures are the answer. If a principal contractor asks for evidence of safe systems of work during a prequalification review, your Safe Work Procedures are what satisfies that requirement.
Our guarantee
If your principal contractor or client requests amendments to any Safe Work Procedure we produce, we revise it at no extra charge for 12 months from the date of delivery. You paid for a compliant document and we make sure it stays that way.

Relevant legislation
As adopted across all Australian states and territories. Every person conducting a business or undertaking has a duty under Section 19 to ensure workers are not exposed to risks to their health and safety. Documented Safe Work Procedures are a primary mechanism for satisfying that duty and demonstrating compliance when it is questioned by a regulator, a principal contractor, or a court.
Requirements vary between states and territories. See the laws in your state.
